Anthology
3 - 15th May 2025, Edaume Gallery, Saga, Japan.
Anthology is an exhibition by photographer, director and educator Lowe H Seger, presenting a curated selection of photographic prints and moving image works produced over the past two decades. The exhibition offers an overview of Seger’s ongoing enquiry into the tensions between presence and absence, clarity and ambiguity, intimacy and detachment.
This marks Seger’s first solo exhibition in Japan.
His practice is rooted in vast photography and life experiences that are deeply anchored in the search for meaning.
In 1984, at the age of 10, Seger began photographing the world to make sense of it and his place within it.
Now known for his rigorous, process-led practice and commitment to details in his traditional analogue methods, Seger approaches photography as both a technical and philosophical practice. His images are characterised by precision, quietness, and a sensitivity to subtleties.
With an underlying tone of existentialism, the artworks celebrate life and evoke death. Seger often uses the banal to highlight awareness in the profound concept of finding significance in both nothing and everything. A reflection on the structures of seeing and being.
This duality suggests that significance can be discovered in all aspects of life, from the monumental to the mundane. It invites a perspective where meaning is seen in everything, encouraging us to look beyond the surface and attend to the nuances and subtleties that surround us.
Promoting the simple beauty and fragile essence of life—such as mindfulness, love, and empathy—Seger’s recent work has evolved to examine consumerism and power structures. It invites reflection on the purpose and grapples with apprehensions about existential meaning, social inequality, and, above all, loss. He challenges the pursuit of greatness and its sacrifices, questioning humanity's self-centred behaviours.
Lowe H Seger invites the viewer to connect more deeply with the world around them, encouraging individuals to explore with non-biased eyes and build on their own perspectives.
Anthology consists of materials developed since 1999 and encompasses the breadth of Seger’s visual practice, positioned at the intersection of fashion, portraiture and fine art—foregrounding conceptual inquiry.
Accompanied by a soundscape, the show offers an open-ended experience in which viewers are invited to navigate without instruction. It fosters introspection rather than interpretation, providing a contemplative space where photographic prints, Polaroids, contact sheets, moving image displays, and sound converge with undertones of stillness.mage, sound, and
The soundscape was created in collaboration with the British artist KwErK, who works predominantly with sound. Seger and KwErK have an ongoing creative relationship, having collaborated on multiple projects in recent years.
